Curriculum

A.G.B.U. Zaroukian School offers a full-day program for children from Pre-Nursery to Grade 4 in an enriched classroom environment with a low student-teacher ratio.

Our curriculum complies with the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines. The academic standards are assessed through the school’s participation in Grade 3 EQAO tests in addition to the mandatory Canadian Basic Skills Tests. Teachers of the core curriculum participate in ongoing professional development.

Pre-Kindegarten

The Pre-Kindergarten program, planned for 2½ and 3 year old children, is a comprehensive readiness program. The young child is introduced to the excitement, challenge and the joy of learning. Singing, building, painting, colouring, talking and listening all contribute to the child’s social and academic development and enhance his/her self-awareness and self-esteem. The child works alone or with the teacher, in a small group or with the whole class, mastering concepts in a warm, caring, happy and secure environment.

Kindergarten – Junior and Senior Kindergarten

Building on the pre-kindergarten program, reading in English and Armenian and oral French is the primary goal of the kindergarten curriculum. Classroom teaching is intended to focus directly on the development of every student’s capability to listen, speak, read and write in both languages, as well as to think independently. The curriculum includes arithmetic, science, environmental studies, computer, art, music and physical education for enrichment. Textbooks are introduced and simple homework is assigned for practice. Children are trained to be responsible with their time and in their work.

Elementary – Grades 1-4

The elementary program comprises Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Environmental Studies, French, Music, Art, Computer Studies and Physical Education. The curriculum of all subjects allows individual children to move beyond the expectations of programs. And when necessary, the programs accommodate modifications to meet the needs of each student. Independent as well as group work is encouraged starting with the younger classes.

  • The elementary language curriculum is designed to foster a life-long appreciation of literature, independent thought, and competency in the use of oral and written English.
  • The math curriculum teaches the students to understand the structure and language of mathematics in theoretical and real life situations.
  • Students develop basic skills of science, which include observing, comparing, organizing, inferring, relating and applying data.
  • The French language program, introduced in J.K., is accelerated and aims to prepare students for French immersion at the middle school level.
  • Armenian studies are an integral part of the school curriculum. It is intended to offer each student the opportunity to develop proficiency in the Armenian language, and to gain knowledge in Armenian history, religion, culture and traditions.
